Laos Buddhist culture is rich in legends and traditions, one of the most peculiar is the alms-giving ceremony. It takes place daily as the sun rises, beginning on the main street of Luang Prabang before spreading out to all the side streets. Around 200 Buddhist monks depart from temples in this UNESCO-listed town to gather their daily meal.
As far back as the 14th century locals wake early to prepare food for the monks and wait quietly by the roadside to give their gifts. This daily ceremony is both peaceful and spiritual and gives you a wonderful opportunity to experience the old Laos.
Early morning our guide will pick you up to buy some of the offerings in advance and arrive early at the main street by the morning market, to wait for the monks. Follow your guide’s instructions and kneel down to present your gift to the monks.
If not making an offering please keep your distance as it is impolite to disrupt the solemn ceremony. Also it is not appropriate to bring young children who might make unwanted noise and disturb the participants. Wear modest clothing.
