Transportation

By Air

There are three international airports in Cambodia: Phnom Penh’s airport is Cambodia’s largest airport and the main gateway into the kingdom, Siem Reap's airport, the gateway to Angkor also welcomes international flights, and Sihanoukville International Airport in the southern resort town of Sihanoukville.

By Road

More than half of Cambodia’s 6,000 kilometres of roads are classified as “poor” or of “bad” quality by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. To cover the distance of 317 km, from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, it usually takes around 6 hours.

By Train

After years of being shut down, today both the Northern and Southern Railway Lines are open for passenger services. The Southern Line runs from Phnom Penh to the coastal city of Sihanoukville, while the Northern Line goes all the way to the Thai border passing by the colonial town of Battambang. These are no bullet trains, as it takes around 7 hours to complete each route, but they make for an authentic way to travel and experience the Khmer countryside.

Currency

The official currency is the Cambodian Riel (KHR) although US dollars are widely accepted. At the time of publishing the exchange rate is US$ 1 = 4000 KHR.

Credit and debit cards are accepted in major hotels in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, while cash is preferred in restaurants, shops, markets and other establishments. There are ATM machines in most cities and towns on the tourist route.

Language

Khmer is the official language although good English is increasingly spoken in the main cities. The local language is written in the Khmer script, aesthetically similar to Thai or Lao.

Tipping

Tipping isn't expected in Cambodia. However, many service workers in Cambodia earn a low wage, so if you are happy with the services provided by waiters, drivers, guides or others, leaving a small tip, depending on the service, will be much appreciated.

Water

It is advisable not to drink water from the tap.

Telecommunications

As in most of Southeast Asia, WIFI is readily available for free in hotels, restaurants, cafes, etc. Moreover, getting a SIM card in Cambodia is fairly simple and cheap (from $2 to $20). We recommend Cellcard or Metfone for most travelers, since they offer the best coverage.

Health & Medical Facilities

No vaccination is required, but visitors are advised to receive inoculations against hepatitis A and B, typhoid and tetanus. Inoculation for yellow fever and tablets for malaria are not necessary although doctors still usually recommend them.

While some highly-regarded hospitals and clinics may be found in and around the capital, Phnom Penh, in more rural areas medical facilities are few and far between. In addition to these difficulties, serious medical complications are often not dealt with in Cambodia itself, but will instead require treatment abroad. We therefore strongly recommend taking out medical travel insurance.
