By Air

There are six major international airports in Thailand: Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport is Thailand’s main international airport and one of the largest in the world; Don Mueang International Airport also in Bangkok is the main base for domestic flights and budget airlines like AirAsia; Phuket International Airport is Thailand’s second busiest airport; Chiang Mai International Airport in the north; Hat Yai International Airport in the south; Samui International Airport in the exclusive resort island of Koh Samui.

By Road

Thailand is widely acknowledged as having the most extensive road transportation network in all of Southeast Asia, with good quality roads both in cities and rural areas. 98% of all roads are paved. The speed limit on the highway is 100 km/h (62 mph) or 120 km/h (75 mph) depending on the road. Travel by car or bus is inexpensive and convenient, especially if using VIP buses.

By Train

Thailand’s 4500km rail network connects major destinations across the country such as Chiang Mai to the north and Surat Thani to the south. Trains are slow but a good alternative for short trips to Ayuthaya or Lopburi.

Currency

The official currency is the Thai Baht (THB). At the time of publishing the exchange rate is US$ 1 = 30,9 THB.

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in most of hotels, restaurants and shops in main cities of Thailand (subject to fees according to your provider).

You can also get cash with your credit or debit card from ATMs in most Thai localities except some of the most remote islands (subject to transaction fees).

Language

Thai is the official language although English is spoken by many in the main cities and tourist hotspots. The language is written in the Thai script, similar to Laotian and Khmer.

Tipping

Tipping is not mandatory or customary in Thailand but small gratuities for great service are very much appreciated. Note that prices in hotels and restaurants usually include 10% for VAT and 5% for service charges.

Water

It is advisable not to drink water from the tap unless it is boiled properly.

Telecommunictions

WIFI is readily available throughout Thailand in cafes, restaurants, hotels and stores. In addition, buying a SIM card is quite simple and inexpensive, they can be purchased either at the airport upon arrival or at dedicated shops or convenient stores across the nation's cities and towns.

Health & Medical Facilities

No vaccination is required, but visitors are advised to receive inoculations against hepatitis A and B, typhoid and tetanus. Inoculation for yellow fever and tablets for malaria are not necessary although doctors still usually recommend them.

Thailand has some of the best medical facilities. The majority of cities and tourist areas have adequate and even excellent healthcare. Always travel with medical insurance. If your health insurance doesn’t cover you for medical expenses abroad, ensure you get specific travel insurance.

Population

Thailand has 69,4 million inhabitants from 62 different ethnic groups, that include the Central Thai (majoritarian ethnic group), the Thai Lao, the Khon Muang, the Pak Tai, the Khmer, Malay and others.

The dominant religions are Buddhism (94% of the population), Islam (4.30% of the population) and Christianity (1% of the population).

Prices displayed are usually fixed, but in places such as traditional markets bargaining in accepted.

Local Time

Thailand is 7 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. It is the same time zone as Vietnam.

Electricity

In Thailand electric current is mostly 220V and sockets are both round and flat types.
